   This is particularly important if you have fur- or feather-bearing pets. Also, you may need to practice frequent vacuuming around a litter box or a cage where pets such as birds or hamsters, or gerbils throw out seed or bedding. If you have a cat or dog, it's essential to get one of the modern new vacuum cleaners designed to suction up animal hair. You'll be glad you did, as pet hair also has pet dander in it -- an allergen. Pet hair can also give off an odor; plus, it attracts dirt, so it can compromise your upholstered furniture.
   
   
2. Keeping your pets clean helps you maintain your home better. 
   You can't wash them every day, but give your dog a bath at least once a week and do brush your dog daily, so you're removing hair before it's shed. Trim nails if you're up to it, or take the dogs to a groomer and let them grind the nails (this will spare some wear and tear on furniture and floors). If your cat will let you give it a bath, great. If your feline resists, professional groomers can probably get it done or show you how. Clipping cat nails might be a veterinarian's job. With other pets, give them plenty of water to do their washing. Birds love splashing around and preening, cleaning their feathers. Do change materials in cages as often as needed.
   
   
3. Wash bedding at least once a week. 
   Pet bedding gets an odor if left unwashed. Wash it frequently so you can also eliminate pet dander. For non-felines and non-canines, clean cages according to recommendations for the particular pet.
   
   
4. Choose pet-resistant fabrics when buying furniture.
   Leather is a good choice, and though it can be scratched, it is usually strong enough to hold up against pets. Otherwise, avoid silk and velvet. Washable slipcovers are also a good idea.
   
   
5. Invest in a portable upholstery cleaner.
   You know that even the best-behaved pets sometimes get sick and lose control, so make sure to have a portable cleaning solution on hand, using it as soon as the mess occurs. Also, try an enzymatic spot cleaner to get rid of stains and odors.

• Trees and Decorations
  Every pet owner knows Christmas trees pose a challenge. They can climb the tree, destroy ornaments and other decorations, and even knock them over. To mitigate this, make sure the base is heavy and sturdy enough to keep the tree upright. Additionally, if you have fragile or breakable ornaments, keep them towards the top of the tree, where they're harder to reach. Put your sturdier ornaments on the bottom, such as wood or metal. Likewise, place any tinsel, holly, and mistletoe out of your pet's reach. If accidentally ingested, they can cause serious health problems.
  
  
• Food
  It's tempting to share your holiday leftovers with your pets, but be careful not to share the wrong ones. Keep anything chocolate away from them, along with alcoholic beverages, foods with salt, or any candy sweetened with Xylitol. Also, avoid giving them anything with raisins or nuts, which are often staples of holiday treats. Foods with seeds or pits, such as cherries, apricots, and especially citrus fruits, should also be kept out of reach. If you're having turkey or other poultry, completely remove any bones and gristle before giving it to your pets. Finally, many pets are drawn to unbaked bread dough. Don't let them have any. The yeasted dough can rise in their stomachs, rupturing internal organs and even causing seizures.
  
  
• Guests
  If you're having people over to your new home, make sure both your guests and your pets are OK with one another first. Clearly tell your guests what kind of pets you have and how many, in case anyone has allergies or other aversions. It can also be overwhelming for pets to meet strangers, especially many of them, at once. Is your pet typically friendly toward other people? Do they get nervous? Do they show aggression? If you're unsure, maybe start with one or two guests to see how they react before throwing a big party. And be sure to have a room for them that's off limits to guests and outfitted with things like blankets and their favorite toys, where your pet can retreat for some peace if the guests become too overwhelming.
  
  
• Noise
  The holidays can get loud. Especially on New Year's Eve, there are often fireworks, noisemakers, shouting, and other sounds that may distress your pet. Even if you're not having people over, the noise around the neighborhood can cause anxiety attacks. Their first instinct will often be to run away, so keep them in a secure place. And in case they do get loose, make sure they have a collar with ID on it: name, address, and phone number, so they can be returned to you safely.

  Your tastebuds are in for a treat when you attend the Boudin Cook-Off and Acadian Bacon Fest on October 22, 2022, this year. Both festivals are taking place at the same time at Parc International in downtown Lafayette. 
  
  This event kicks off at 10:00 am. Culinary vendors include Acadian Slice, Bosco's Specialty Bites, Broaddus Burgers, Chop's Specialty Meats, and Kernis Louviere. In addition to great food, there will be carnival games with prizes, a bacon-eating contest, and live music on stage.
  
  Admission to the Boudin Cook-Off and Acadian Bacon Fest is free. You can purchase food-tasting tickets on-site at a price of 10 for $10. After you sample, you get to rate dishes, and your opinion will be taken into account when the dishes are judged.
  
  
• Movies in the Parc; Wizard of Oz: 200 Garfield St, Lafayette, LA 70501
  Movies in the Parc is the perfect event for families with kids. On October 29th, gates will open at 4:00 pm at Parc International. You may enter and take a seat on the lawn; bring your own blanket or chairs to sit on. 
  
  The featured movie on October 29th is The Wizard of Oz, a classic that appeals to all ages. Admission is free, and there will be fun children's activities, including crafts and train rides, before the movie. Costumes are not required but consider dressing up like a character from the movie for some extra fun.
  
  
• Rally for Rozas:  200 Garfield St, Lafayette, LA 70501
  Take a break from attending Lafayette open houses, and spend a few hours at the Rally for Rozas. This event, which is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th, is a fundraiser to support Officer Rozas.   Rally for Rozas begins at 10:00 am. Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band will take the stage at 12:00 pm, followed by Geno Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie. There will also be lots of delicious gumbo and other Louisiana favorites for sale.

  The tree known as the St. John Cathedral Oak is inarguably the most famous tree in Lafayette. One of the largest live oaks in the United States, it's estimated to be around 500 years old. The Cathedral Oak stands approximately 126 feet high and has a spread of 210 feet across. Measurements of its circumference vary but typically come in around 29 feet.   Joseph Jefferson was an actor and comedian in the mid-19th century, and he was about as famous as a 19th-century comedian and actor could get. So much so that president Grover Cleveland—a fan and admirer of Jefferson—visited him on his property in Louisiana in 1892. While touring the areas that are now known as Jefferson Island and Avery Island, Cleveland noticed two majestic oaks that Jefferson later nicknamed in his honor. In-ground automatic sprinklers play an important role in maintaining a high-quality lawn. Evenly distributing water across your landscaping at certain intervals throughout the day helps promote healthy grass, great-looking shrubs, and beautiful flowers. Using a sprinkler system is much more efficient than manually watering your plants each day. However, installing sprinkler systems isn't always easy. If you're planning to install your own system, below are some tips to help guide you through the process.

1. Mark Your Pipe And Sprinkler Heads 
   The first step is determining your ideal irrigation plan. The right distribution of water at the proper intervals is critical for maintaining a healthy lawn. If you need some guidance, our real estate agents can refer a number of professional landscapers that can help.
   
   Once you've determined your plan, you'll need to mark the locations of your planned sprinklers with stakes or flags. Then, use string to mark the locations of your pipes.
   
   
2. Dig Trenches
   After you've mapped out your pipe and sprinkler heads, you'll need to dig trenches 6 to 12 inches deep. The actual size will depend on the size of your pipe. Make sure to allow for more than enough room as you don't want to end up with exposed pipes in your yard. When digging trenches, we recommend placing soil on one side and sod on the other. It's usually easiest to rent a power trencher as digging manually can take quite some time.
   
   
3. Connect Your Water System
   The next step is hooking up your sprinkler system to your water supply. The easiest thing to do is to connect your system directly to a spigot (you can also connect to your main water line if necessary, but this work may be best suited for a plumber). When connecting to a spigot, you'll need to shut off your water supply. Then, swap out the original spigot with a brass tee. After that, you'll need to match the outlets with the faucet and irrigation pipe and connect them by fitting the short pipe with threads into the tee stem. 
   
   
4. Install Valve Manifold and Lay The Pipe
   Next, in order to install the valve manifold, create a hole that is just big enough to hold the valve manifold box. Then, attach the water supply to one end of the manifold. Afterward, lay your PVC pipe along your trenches and your sprinkler heads at the designated markers.
   
   
5. Assemble Your Pieces
   Begin at your first sprinkler and assemble your pipes and pieces (except for the sprinkler heads). Connect the parts at each sprinkler location. It's easy for dirt to find its way into your pipes, so you'll want to adequately flush your pipes by turning your water on and opening up each value. Be sure to close each valve before moving on to the next one. After you've flushed out the entire system, you can attach your sprinkler heads.
   
   
6. Connect The Wiring
   Lastly, place the programmable timer on the wall and wire the connection box. If you're not experienced working with wires or electricity, it's a good idea to consult an electrician. You'll need to attach your 24-volt wires to the timer terminal. After the wiring is set up, you can set the timer to match your desired irritation plan.

After you've connected the wiring, then you can test your system and fill your trenches.

You hate throwing away all that kitchen waste: coffee grounds and tea bags, apple and potato peels, tops of strawberries, outer layers of an onion, and more. Most of it probably goes in the waste bin, right? 

But what if you could turn that waste into good garden soil by composting it? Let's take a look at what's involved with composting and how to get started.

1. What Can You Compost?
   You can compost most vegetable scraps, grass clippings, leaves (it's better if big, tough leaves have been cut up first by a lawnmower), and even eggs shells (wash them first). Avoid adding cooked or oily food, meat, so-called compostable bags and wipes, and bones. Protein and oily foods can attract rodents. Store compostable bits in the fridge or freezer in a bag until you're ready to add them to the mix.
   
   
2. Choose Your Composting Site Carefully
   A backyard compost site should be in at least partial sun so that it will "cook" faster. But the compost may also dry out faster, so be sure to wet it now and then. Beware of starting a compost pile in the backyard if you have a dog.
   
   Or buy a compost bin, where you can add the compostable stuff, and if it's the turnable type, mix it up a couple of times a day. Another method is to place the compostable material in a sealable container with some Bokashi mix, which is a colony of bacteria that ferments food scraps.
   
   
3. Add Your Greens and Browns
   There are two types of material to compost. Green material is nitrogen-rich and includes fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, grass clippings -- all crucial for microbial growth.
   
   But you also need browns to provide carbon. Typical sources are paper, such as egg cartons and newspaper, dried leaves, and other dried plant material.
   
   Greens are wet, and browns are dry. You generally should have more browns than greens, with browns layered on the bottom and greens on top. Typically layers are 2 inches each, and you continue to create new layers as you go so that aeration can take place between them and break the material down. If it doesn't break down, you will have a stagnant mess. Stir the compost or toss it after a time with a pitchfork. If you're using a compost bin, give it a turn a couple of times a day.
   
   
4. How Long Does it Take?
   In cold weather, it could take six months or so for compost to break down, but in hot weather, compost can break down in two months.
   
   Be mindful of the smell of your compost. If it starts to stink -- like a landfill or a dumpster -- you may need to add brown material. Compost, when finished, should smell woody and earthy and may have a sweet or even somewhat sour smell -- but never rotten. When you've achieved fluffy compost, then it's ready to put in your garden or even to donate to a community garden.
