About the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre

The Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre was established in 1960 and has been a cultural force in Louisiana ever since. • PILOBOLUS Big Five-Oh! (March 4 and 5, 2023)
  One of the most renowned dance ensembles in the world, Pilobolus has been touring the globe for a half-century now, performing at events ranging from the Olympics to the Oscars. In 2023, they're touring in celebration of their 50th anniversary, which will include a stop in Baton Rouge for two performances at the Manship Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts on March 4 and 5. 

• Dimensions in Dance (March 31, 2023)
  The final celebration of the 2022-2023 season, Dimensions in Dance promises to be a thrilling performance that celebrates dance from all angles. The full range of styles, approaches, and moods of contemporary and classical dance will be highlighted on March 31 at the River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts, including a grand performance of Paquita.

  Deutsches Haus is a German cultural center that hosts a variety of events throughout the year. It includes a festival hall and two bars, where they serve 20 different German and craft beers. They're also the main sponsor of Oktoberfest in New Orleans. The Deutsche Haus Bier Musikanten (Deutsche Haus Beer Musicians) will be performing the first two weekends. They're also selling limited edition, German-made, ceramic Oktoberfest steins, which you can pre-order. They're beautifully crafted and a great souvenir. 

  The Deutsches Haus hosts its annual Oktoberfest on October 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22 this year. Tickets to the official festival are $10 per day and free for children under 12. The proceedings are steeped in local tradition, featuring a variety of events, from German music and dancing to funny singalongs to a beer stein holding contest, and much more. There's even a children's area with games, arts and crafts, and family-friendly performances.

• Faubourg Brewing Co. - 3501 Jourdan Rd, New Orleans, LA 70126
  Faubourg Brewing Co. hosted their annual Oktoberfest during the traditional celebration time. But that doesn't mean you've missed out on all the fun! Be sure to check out their website for their latest beer offerings, which you can order by the pint, pitcher, or as a part of a flight. Voted Top Craft Brewery by New Orleans Magazine, this brewery is well worth a stop at any point of the year. 
  
  
• Bratz Y'all Bistro - 617-B Piety St, New Orleans, LA 70117
  If you're looking for authentic German food, Bratz Y'all is a necessary stop on your Oktoberfest journey. Their offerings include everything from beer brats to schnitzel to Bavarian Leberkäse - German meatloaf served with an egg, sunny side up. They also have pretzel dips, apple strudel, and much more.   Fall is the perfect season for a gallery event like this one. The weather should be pleasantly cool so you can walk around all evening from gallery to gallery without getting too hot.

  The Gallery Promenade takes place throughout Lake Charles. • Krewe Bohème 
  True to their name, Krewe Bohème proudly embraces an unconventional spirit. Their parade is headed up by a green fairy that symbolizes absinthe, the anise-flavored liqueur so identified with traditional New Orleans cocktails, and their throws are created by artists in their membership. At 7 p.m. on Friday, February 11, Krewe Bohème starts off at Franklin Ave. near Dauphine St., ending up at the Joy Theater.
  
  
• Krewdelusion
  Irreverent satire is the name of the game for Krewedelusion. Their stated mission is "to save the Universe, beginning at its center, New Orleans," and their parade theme is a closely guarded secret each year until showtime. Krewedelusion follows KdV at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, proceeding from the corner of Franklin Ave. and Royal St. to D.B.A. on Frenchman St.
  
  
• Krewe of Cork
  It's no surprise that Krewe of Cork is devoted to all things wine. In addition to wine-related costumes and throws featuring a grape logo, their parades include golf cart-driving "wine police" whose motto is, "To serve and pour." Krewe of Cork will head out from Royal St. between St. Peter and Toulouse St. at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 18, finishing up on Conti between Royal and Bourbon St. 
  
  
• Krewe of Barkus
  Krewe of Barkus includes a number of four-legged members, as man's best friend takes the spotlight. Founder Thomas Wood made his own Jo Jo McWood queen of the parade and captain for life, kicking off a tradition that continues today. Join the fun at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, as Krewe of Barkus walks from N. Rampart at St. Ann to Orleans St. 

Metairie

• Krewe of Excalibur
  Head back to the swashbuckling times of King Arthur as you watch the antics of Krewe of Excalibur. Members in full knight attire follow animated floats and throw hand-decorated wooden shields out to the crowd. On Friday, February 18, the parade kicks off at 6:30 p.m. The procession follows the Metairie Westbound route, starting at Bonnabel Blvd. and Nero St. and finishing at Nero St.
  
  
• Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters
  Making their Mardi Gras debut this year, Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters channels all the whimsy and imagination found in Alice in Wonderland. Watch for some well-known bands on their floats, as well as dazzling lighting effects and spectacular costumes. The festivities start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, as Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters proceeds along the Metairie Westbound route.

About the Museum

It's the goal of the Louisiana Art & Science Museum to provide the public - especially students - with a greater understanding and appreciation of art and science and foster creativity and discovery. The museum is located at 100 River Road South Baton Rouge, LA 70802, in a rebuilt railroad station in the heart of downtown, on the bank of the Mississippi River.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, the museum is open Wednesday through Friday, 10 am to 3 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, 1 pm to 5 pm. Admission is $12 for adults or $10 for children and seniors. There are also group rates available, as well as special rates for students, educators, military personnel, and first responders. The first Sunday of every month, admission is free to everyone.

Exhibits

One of the most popular attractions at the museum is the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium - a large, domed theater that shows the wonders of space in crystal clear 4K video and 5.1 surround sound. The planetarium has scheduled a variety of different shows throughout the week, exploring things like Saturn's rings, planets beyond our solar system, and even the inner workings of the human brain.

Apart from the planetarium, the museum has several other space-themed exhibits. The Planet Tower contains enormous scale models of the sun and the planets. The Solar System Gallery displays images from the Hubble Telescope - along with a 239-pound Triceratops skull named Jason. And the Universe Gallery contains the OmniGlobe - a 3D model of the Earth with a digital screen that can demonstrate heliophysics, ocean science, atmospheric conditions, and more.

Space isn't the only place visitors can explore, though. The Ancient Egypt gallery shows artifacts dating back to 323 B.C., including a fully preserved mummy. There's plenty of information in the gallery on the mummy's discovery, as well as on the general time period and what life was like at the time.

Interactive Events

Another thing the Art & Science Museum is known for is hands-on exhibits. The Science Station allows children to conduct experiments in sound, light, and motion, as well as demonstrate nanoscale in science and engineering. For younger children, the Discovery Depot has everything from building blocks to train sets to puppets.

Unfortunately, the interactive exhibits are currently closed due to the pandemic. In the meantime, the museum has provided a virtual museum, with a series of activities that children of all ages can do at home, either with their parents or on their own. These activities include printable coloring book pages, crafts like making your own rain stick, experiments in force and motion, and much more. There are also virtual tours available of the galleries that are currently closed to in-person visits.

You can also host your child's birthday party at the museum, which includes a number of hands-on activities, and even a gift registry through the Museum Store. The museum can be booked for grown-up events as well, including wedding receptions and cocktail parties.

  One of Lafayette's oldest murals, Downtown Reawakening was completed in 1984. It's the work of local artist and gallery owner Tanya Falgout and depicts a birds-eye view of the city as it appeared in the early '80s.   Pat Juneau's whimsical Bicycle Sculptures add a splash of color to Lafayette's Vermillion Street. Juneau is one of Louisiana's foremost metalsmiths, and he's also responsible for the Dinosaur Pole Sculptures at the Lafayette Science Museum.

  Horizon is the work of acclaimed mural artist Robert Dafford. Completed in 1988, it's a tribute to Louisiana's landscape as well as its musical heritage. This mural is also part of Dafford's "Flying Violin" series of murals, which includes similar murals in locations around the globe, including Ottawa, Canada, and Suresnes, France.
  
  
• Thalassa - 113 Clinton St, Lafayette, LA 70501
  The eye-catching Thalassa mural at Basin Arts spans two stories and is the work of local multimedia artist Susan David. The mural is a dramatic depiction of Thalassa, a primeval spirit of the sea in Greek mythology. It was created in 2016, and its painter has been responsible for several great public art projects around town. 
  
  
• McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Living Legends Wall - 713 LA 728-8, Lafayette, LA 70501
  Completed in 2016 by artist Adrian Fulton, the McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Living Legends Wall is a loving tribute to nine members of the local community who have made great contributions to education, government, culture, and activism in Lafayette. The mural is on the side of Kirk's U-Needa-Butcher Shop, a reminder that great art can be anywhere.

There may be some debate over exactly when jazz began, but few dispute that this rich musical genre originated in New Orleans. In honor of International Jazz Day on Friday, April 30, our real estate agents take a look at the history of Louisiana's iconic sound.

What Is Jazz?

While jazz is a distinctly American form of music, its influences reach around the globe. African-Americans melded their own musical traditions with elements such as Caribbean syncopation and European folk, adding improvisation for a unique sound. Some historians believe jazz has its roots in New Orleans Congo Square.

First Man of Jazz: Buddy Bolden

While the term didn't come into use until after his time, cornet player Charles "Buddy" Bolden is generally considered to be the father of jazz. Bolden's intuitive ear for music led him to adapt ideas from other classic American musical styles, such as gospel and blues.

Dancing was a popular form of entertainment in New Orleans, but until the turn of the 20th century, most dance bands played a more sedate form of music that relied on string instruments. Bolden formed his own band in 1895 and developed an avid following by playing looser, more lively dance tunes in which brass instruments were front-and-center.

Louis Armstrong and the Rise of the Solo Artist 

Despite Buddy Bolden's prominence, jazz remained primarily identified with bands. Thanks to traveling groups, which began migrating to Chicago and other major cities, the New Orleans sound was becoming acclaimed throughout the country.

Another jazz artist who headed to Chicago in search of fame was a trumpeter named Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. His brilliant playing was at a level far above any other musicians at the time and led to a shift from the conventional ensemble style of jazz to an emphasis on solo performers.

Jazz in the Modern Era

During the 1950s, the popularity of jazz began to wane as rock and roll captured the attention of the listening public. When Larry Borenstein opened his new art gallery in the French Quarter, just minutes from Houma homes for sale, he realized it left him little time to attend his beloved jazz concerts, which had become few and far between.

Borenstein's solution was to invite the musicians to perform "rehearsal sessions" at his gallery, Associated Artists. Thus began the saga of Preservation Hall, which became the standard-bearer for classic New Orleans jazz. The venue officially took on the name when Borenstein passed the operations on to the family of Allan and Sandra Jaffe.

As part of the effort to revive national interest in jazz, Allan Jaffe organized the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. After a successful tour of the Midwest, the band eventually began appearing in venues around the world. 

Jazz is the heartbeat of Louisiana: exciting, entertaining, and unpredictable. There are many venues across the state where you can listen to talented jazz musicians.

• St. Louis Cathedral - 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA 70116
  Stunning inside and out, St. Louis Cathedral was built in 1789, replacing a previous structure that was lost to the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788. The church has some of New Orleans' most iconic spires, as well as stained glass windows and frescoes painted by the great Erasmus Humbrecht.
  
  
• Pontalba Buildings - 500 St. Ann Street, New Orleans, LA 70116
  Overlooking Jackson Square, the matching brick apartment buildings at 500 St. Ann Street and 500 St. Peter Street is collectively known as the Pontalba Buildings. Each of these instantly-recognizable 1840s Parisian-style row house buildings stretches an entire block in the French Quarter. They are—at least according to legend—the oldest apartment buildings in America. 
  
  
• New Canal Lighthouse - 8001 Lakeshore Dr, New Orleans, LA 70124
  Overlooking Lake Pontchartrain at the north end of the New Basin Canal, the New Canal Lighthouse was built in 1939. This unique red and white structure is open daily for guided tours. The lighthouse was restored in 2013 after being heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. 
  
  
• Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop - 941 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70116
  One of New Orleans' oldest and most haunted locations, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop isn't really a blacksmith shop. It's a bar, and it's been serving drinks since the 1700s. The building was built between 1722 and 1732, and according to some accounts, was owned for a time by the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte. It's one of a select few structures that vie for the title of Oldest Bar in America. 
  
  
• New Orleans Lakefront Airport - 6001 Stars and Stripes Boulevard #219 Suite 204, New Orleans, LA 70126
  The New Orleans Lakefront Airport was considered an architectural masterpiece when it was first built in the 1930s. Today it serves only small-scale flights (it was replaced as NOLA's primary airport by Louis Armstrong Airport in 1946) but is still a striking example of the Art Deco style of the time. 
  
  
• Degas House - 2306 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119
  The one-time home of French Impressionist master Edgar Degas, the Degas House was built in the 1850s and is located a stone's throw from Bourbon Street. A picturesque house with white columns and handsome wrought-iron balcony railings, it is now operated as a museum and bed-and-breakfast. 
  
  
• The Cabildo - 701 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130
  The Cabildo was built between 1795 and 1799 and is one of the most historically significant buildings in America. Now a museum, the Cabildo was once the seat of the Spanish colonial government and is where the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies took place in 1803. 
  
  
• Doullut Steamboat Houses - 400 Egania St, New Orleans, LA 70117
  In 1905, steamboat captain Paul Doullut built a house for his family that looked just like a steamboat. In 1913, he built another one a few hundred yards away for his son. To this day, the two neighboring 9th Ward homes known as the Doullut Steamboat Houses are among the most charming historic homes in New Orleans.

1. Creole Cottages
   A staple of New Orleans architecture, Creole Cottages are single-story homes built between 1790 and 1850. These beautiful homes are frequently found throughout the French Quarter and neighboring parts of town. These homes typically sit on the front of the property line, have four small square rooms and a steep roof. The architectural design is largely influenced by French Canadian design, but also has a bit of Caribbean style. 
   
   
2. Shotgun Houses
   Shotgun houses get their name from the idea that if you fired a shotgun through the front door, the bullet could fly through every room of the house. These unique homes are usually about 12 feet wide and have classic Victorian embellishments. Some historians believe these homes originated in the Creole suburbs of New Orleans, but today you can find them all over the city.
   
   
3. American Townhouse
   One of our favorite styles of New Orleans homes is the classic American townhouse. The Central Business District is full of these slim three-story buildings, which are usually made of brick. They're fairly asymmetrical and are easy to spot because they have beautiful second-story balconies that extend to the front of the property line. 
   
   
4. Double Gallery House
   A close relative to the American townhouse, the double gallery houses are a common architectural style found in New Orleans. These buildings also have a grand second-story balcony supported by multiple columns. However, they tend to be wider than American townhouses and usually sit back from the property line. 
   
   
5. California Style Bungalow
   Built in the early 20th century, California bungalows can be found throughout many popular NOLA neighborhoods. These homes have a low facade and frequently appear to be more horizontal than vertical. They're usually only one to one and a half stories tall and have sloping roofs with unenclosed rafters. They also often have a brick facade with wood siding and distinguishable columns that support the overhanging roof.

Planting the Seeds

Dubbed a "magical mystery tour" by one enchanted viewer, the Chauvin Sculpture Garden has an origin story as fascinating as the art itself. All pieces were created by a man named Kenny Hill, a bricklayer by trade who came to Chauvin in 1988, seeking work on construction sites.

A generous landowner offered to let Hill stay on a piece of his property along the banks of the Bayou Petit Caillou. Hill pitched a tent and lived there until he built a simple cabin using materials he salvaged from various spots.

Despite having no formal training, Hill possessed a great deal of natural artistic talent. In 1990, feeling the need for a greater range of creative expression than his day job allowed, Hill began crafting his heartfelt and thought-provoking sculptures.

An Artist's Personal Journey

The Chauvin Sculpture Garden contains more than 100 concrete sculptures, breathtaking in physical size, and thematic scope. 

Standing above it all is the 45-foot-tall lighthouse made with 7,000 bricks. The vividly-colored structure features an eclectic assortment of characters, including cowboys, musicians, children, and angels, clinging to the sides in a desperate search for safety.

Remarkably, Hill himself appears in a number of these tableaux. His distinctive long-haired and bearded image seems to act as a guide, silently drawing viewers' attention to particularly significant points.

Not surprisingly, Hill's venture began garnering public interest. He resolutely refused to talk to the media, giving only the cryptic comment that the garden was a "story of salvation" for residents. While Hill allowed some of his curious neighbors to visit, he steadfastly avoided publicizing the garden.

Preserving Hill's Vision

Sadly, when Hill's benefactor and landlord passed away, he abandoned his project in 2000 after being evicted by the local parish for lack of upkeep. Would this incredible work of art end up overcome by the forces of nature?

The story had a happy ending when Dennis Sipiorski, an art professor at Nicholls State University in nearby Thibodaux, contacted the Kohler Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving folk art. Kohler purchased the property and donated it to NSU. 

In 2002, the Chauvin Sculpture Garden was opened to the public with an official dedication ceremony. The site is also home to the NSU Folk Art Studio, where visitors may purchase books, local artwork, and various souvenirs.
