Can you believe that the Louisiana Marathon is already around the corner? Whether you've been training to participate in the race or you're looking forward to enjoying the festivities as a spectator, there's so much to look forward to with the Louisiana Marathon this year. • Full Marathon
  The full marathon is the cornerstone of the whole race weekend for both spectators and the many runners who've been training for the Louisiana Marathon all year long. The course winds through downtown Baton Rouge, along the river, through the LSU campus, and through some of the most historic neighborhoods near Baton Rouge homes for sale. This marathon is also an official qualifier for the Boston Marathon, boasting one of the highest qualifying rates of any marathon in the country thanks to the flat, fast, and very runner-friendly course. The full marathon kicks off on January 15, 2023, at 7:00 AM.

• Half Marathon and Quarter Marathon
  If you've been training hard but don't quite feel ready for the full marathon, the Louisiana Marathon offers a variety of other race lengths that offer a fun, inviting challenge while helping you continue to develop your running skills. Both the half and quarter marathons follow similar paths to the main marathon, just shorter in length. The half marathon starts at the same time as the full marathon on Sunday, while the quarter marathon will be on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 8:00 AM.

• Louisiana Marathon 5k and Kids "Marathon."
  The Louisiana Marathon features something for everyone, including shorter races ideal for newer runners or anyone who wants to get the whole family involved in the fun. Whether you're aiming to set a personal best or you just want to participate in the race weekend while enjoying the atmosphere, the fast, scenic 5k course is sure to please. The kids are sure to love participating in the kid's marathon, a one-mile run that ends with a trip to the fun Kids Zone. The 5k kicks off alongside the quarter marathon on Saturday morning, while the kid's marathon starts right after the 5k ends at 10:15 AM on Saturday.

• How to Sign Up or Donate
  If you're interested in participating in any of the races that we've covered, there's still time to sign up and secure your spot. You can easily sign up through the Louisiana Marathon website, with registration ending on the day of each race. You can also make a donation on the website toward the charitable causes supported by the Louisiana Marathon.

• Spectator Info for the Louisiana Marathon
  The Louisiana Marathon is a great event for spectators, too! There's no cost to watch the event, whether you're cheering on a specific participant or supporting every runner who passes by you. Check the course information for the Saturday Races and Sunday Races to find the best spots for spectating on each day, then head out early on race day to get the best views.

About the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre

• PILOBOLUS Big Five-Oh! (March 4 and 5, 2023)
  One of the most renowned dance ensembles in the world, Pilobolus has been touring the globe for a half-century now, performing at events ranging from the Olympics to the Oscars. In 2023, they're touring in celebration of their 50th anniversary, which will include a stop in Baton Rouge for two performances at the Manship Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts on March 4 and 5. 

• Dimensions in Dance (March 31, 2023)
  The final celebration of the 2022-2023 season, Dimensions in Dance promises to be a thrilling performance that celebrates dance from all angles. The full range of styles, approaches, and moods of contemporary and classical dance will be highlighted on March 31 at the River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts, including a grand performance of Paquita.

  One of Lafayette's oldest murals, Downtown Reawakening was completed in 1984. It's the work of local artist and gallery owner Tanya Falgout and depicts a birds-eye view of the city as it appeared in the early '80s. Juneau is one of Louisiana's foremost metalsmiths, and he's also responsible for the Dinosaur Pole Sculptures at the Lafayette Science Museum. 
  
  
• Horizon Mural - 200 W. Vermilion St, Lafayette, LA 70501
  Horizon is the work of acclaimed mural artist Robert Dafford. Completed in 1988, it's a tribute to Louisiana's landscape as well as its musical heritage. This mural is also part of Dafford's "Flying Violin" series of murals, which includes similar murals in locations around the globe, including Ottawa, Canada, and Suresnes, France.
  
  
• Thalassa - 113 Clinton St, Lafayette, LA 70501
  The eye-catching Thalassa mural at Basin Arts spans two stories and is the work of local multimedia artist Susan David. The mural is a dramatic depiction of Thalassa, a primeval spirit of the sea in Greek mythology. It was created in 2016, and its painter has been responsible for several great public art projects around town. 
  
  
• McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Living Legends Wall - 713 LA 728-8, Lafayette, LA 70501
  Completed in 2016 by artist Adrian Fulton, the McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Living Legends Wall is a loving tribute to nine members of the local community who have made great contributions to education, government, culture, and activism in Lafayette. The mural is on the side of Kirk's U-Needa-Butcher Shop, a reminder that great art can be anywhere.

Traditionally, lighthouses serve to guide marine travelers to safety. Just minutes from Houma homes for sale, a special lighthouse acts as a beacon directing visitors to a unique art display that's a favorite destination of our real estate agents. Experience this piece of local history first-hand with a visit to the Chauvin Sculpture Garden.

Planting the Seeds

Dubbed a "magical mystery tour" by one enchanted viewer, the Chauvin Sculpture Garden has an origin story as fascinating as the art itself. All pieces were created by a man named Kenny Hill, a bricklayer by trade who came to Chauvin in 1988, seeking work on construction sites.

A generous landowner offered to let Hill stay on a piece of his property along the banks of the Bayou Petit Caillou. Hill pitched a tent and lived there until he built a simple cabin using materials he salvaged from various spots.

Despite having no formal training, Hill possessed a great deal of natural artistic talent. In 1990, feeling the need for a greater range of creative expression than his day job allowed, Hill began crafting his heartfelt and thought-provoking sculptures.

An Artist's Personal Journey

The Chauvin Sculpture Garden contains more than 100 concrete sculptures, breathtaking in physical size, and thematic scope. 

Standing above it all is the 45-foot-tall lighthouse made with 7,000 bricks. The vividly-colored structure features an eclectic assortment of characters, including cowboys, musicians, children, and angels, clinging to the sides in a desperate search for safety.

Remarkably, Hill himself appears in a number of these tableaux. His distinctive long-haired and bearded image seems to act as a guide, silently drawing viewers' attention to particularly significant points.

Not surprisingly, Hill's venture began garnering public interest. He resolutely refused to talk to the media, giving only the cryptic comment that the garden was a "story of salvation" for residents. While Hill allowed some of his curious neighbors to visit, he steadfastly avoided publicizing the garden.

Preserving Hill's Vision

Sadly, when Hill's benefactor and landlord passed away, he abandoned his project in 2000 after being evicted by the local parish for lack of upkeep. Would this incredible work of art end up overcome by the forces of nature?

The story had a happy ending when Dennis Sipiorski, an art professor at Nicholls State University in nearby Thibodaux, contacted the Kohler Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving folk art. Kohler purchased the property and donated it to NSU. 

In 2002, the Chauvin Sculpture Garden was opened to the public with an official dedication ceremony. The site is also home to the NSU Folk Art Studio, where visitors may purchase books, local artwork, and various souvenirs.

Visit the Chauvin Sculpture Garden at 5337 Bayouside Dr. Hours are dawn to dusk daily, with bilingual guided tours offered on the weekends. Admission is free for all guests.

  The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum may have its roots in academics, but its broader vision is that "viewing art promotes dialogue and understanding between individuals, families, and communities." In addition to a permanent collection of European, Asian and American works, the museum presents exhibits featuring a wide range of artists with local ties. The museum is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with extended hours of 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. each Wednesday, during which admission is free. Regular admission is $5 for adults and $3 for kids aged 5 to 17.  
• Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance Center - 200 N. Magdalen Square, Abbeville, LA 70510
